A man was robbed for two pizzas valued at around $13, police said.
A recent robbery on New Year’s Eve may have been the last one in Skokie for 2011. A Little Casers employee delivering two pizzas in the 4900 block of Hull Street was robbed on Dec. 31 around 11 p.m. According to the report, the victim was punched in the face by two men while waiting in an apartment complex hallway. The report also noted that the victim fled the scene frightened, leaving the pizzas behind. After the robbery, the delivery boy called police and returned to the scene of the crime. The victim was unable to locate the pizzas, which were valued at about $13, according to the report. The answer differs greatly from readers' impressions in a previous poll.
In a recent poll we asked our readers if they believe violent crime in Skokie has "gone up, down or stayed the same?" It turns out that readers have a much different view of crime in Skokie than what the police department's statistics show. More than 170 people responded to our poll, with 161 — or 91 percent — stating they believe violent crime in Skokie has gone up. Only seven people voted that crime has gone down and another 10 said it has stayed the same. The poll ran alongside an article about two armed robberies — which had similar methods of operation — in two days. Drug paraphernalia Diego Leon Gomez, 18, of the 1200 block of Dodge Avenue in Evanston, was charged with possession of drug paraphernalia on Jan. 25 around 8:30 p.m. Police responded to the 3300 block of Church Street regarding a group of rowdy youths. When officers spoke with Gomez, he admitted to having a metal pipe that contained marijuana residue. Nordstrom clerk scams thousands Billy Tipton Ward, 38, of the 1100 block of Museum Boulevard in Chicago, was charged with felony theft after scamming more than $3,000 from his employer, the Nordstrom store at Old Orchard Mall. Trio of construction vehicles vanish A Skokie businessman came into the police station to report that his dump truck, trailer and Bobcat construction truck were missing Jan. 25. According to the report, the man received a phone call from the Calumet Park Police Department informing him that they had located his vehicles. However, when the owner went to pick up the trucks, he noticed that all three were not at the location. Calumet police stated they initially observed the dump truck at 126 Paulina Ave. at 7:30 a.m. At 10:30 a.m., police called the owner to pick up the vehicles. New graffiti on Oakton Street While on routine patrol, officers noticed “LFKK” was spray painted on A&J Nails & Spa in the 4700 block of Oakton Street on Jan. 19 around 8 p.m. The business was closed at the time, but police left a message detailing the vandalism. Identity theft A man came into the Skokie police station on Jan. 21 to report that his personal information was used to open a Sear’s account. According to the report, the man never opened the account and $3,765.26 was charged to the card. The man also reported the unauthorized opening of a Best Buy credit card in Wisconsin under his name and more than $3,000 was charged. Police are investigating the matters. DUI arrest Paul Vito, 46, of the 900 block of Grant Street in Des Plaines, was charged with driving under the influence of alcohol on Dec. 31 around 2:30 a.m. Police stopped Vito near the 8000 block of Lincoln Avenue after his vehicle was scene swerving and other suspicious driving. Vito recorded a blood alcohol content level of .111. Man's vehicle crashed after assault On Friday Nov. 26 around 2 a.m., police were dispatched to the 8700 block of St. Louis Avenue regarding a fight. Upon arrival, police observed a tan Chevrolet Tahoe crashed into a power line pole near Dempster Street and St. Louis Avenue. According to the report, a man was approached by five men and asked what gang he belongs to. The victim said he didn't belong to any gang but was still attacked by the group. The report goes on to say that the victim managed to escape and retrieved a knife from his home, but when he came outside to confront the mob, he saw that they were gone and that his SUV had been crashed into a power line pole. ATM skimming A man came into the Skokie police station to report a deceptive practice on Nov. 16 around 11 a.m. According to the report, two withdrawals totaling $960 were made from his Chase bank account. The report goes on to say that Chase would not re-credit his account because his PIN was used during the transaction. The man was most likely a victim of ATM skimming. Less than two months after it officially became a communitywide organization, Skokie Voice surpassed the 100th-paid-member mark during an open house Sunday. Although the grass-roots group wants to promote an open channel of communication with village officials, some members want to tackle other issues, such as how an apparent rise in crime is affecting Skokie.
