U.S. News and World Report's annual high school rankings are out and School District 219 is unranked.
For the third straight year, District 219's Niles North and Niles West high school were unranked in U.S. News and World Report's annual high school rankings. The magazine released their data on Monday. The number one high school in Illinois is Northside College Preparatory High School in Chicago, according to U.S. News and World Report's annual rankings. The best suburban school: Adlai E. Stevenson in Lincolnshire, coming in at number five. Despite having the second highest cost per pupil in the state, Niles North and Niles West remained unranked by the magazine for the third straight year. Students from Niles North and Niles West High School will be traveling to the University of Illinois to compete in a translation competition.
Recently, Niles West and Niles North held translation competitions at their schools. Participants translated a designated text from any of the official 23 European Union languages into English. The school winners then qualified for the Illinois High School Translation Competition held on May 2 at the University of Illinois, Urbana-Champaign, sponsored by the Center for Translation Studies and the European Union Center. Niles West winners were Christian Vega, translating from Spanish to English, and Barbara Gawin, translating from Polish to English. Students from Niles West High School won first place and more than 30 awards at the Illinois Junior Academy Regional Fair recently.
Niles West competed at the regional Illinois Junior Academy of Science (IJAS) Regional Fair on Saturday, March 9 at Niles North High School. Niles West earned first place in the high school division, 30 projects earned gold awards and 36 students qualified for the IJAS State Exposition to be held May 3 and 4 at the University of Illinois, Champaign-Urbana. Felicia Phan and Patrick Liscio were selected to represent Region 6 at the Intel International Science and Engineering Fair (ISEF), the world’s largest pre-college celebration of science. The ISEF will be held in Phoenix, Ariz., on May 12 and May 17. The ISEF brings together nearly 1,500 students from more than 70 countries to showcase their talent on an international stage. Catch students from Niles North and Niles West on Chicago ABC 7 tomorrow, March 13. The students teamed up with Oak Street Design to create sculptures to be displayed at Westfield Old Orchard Mall this spring.
Students at District 219 will be featured on Chicago ABC 7 on Wednesday, March 13 at 11:40 a.m. District 219 fashion design construction and merchandising classes are teaming up with Westfield Old Orchard Mall for the 2013 Prom Promotion: Glass Slipper Project, by creating public art sculptures for display at the mall. The classes visited Oak Street Design, a visual resource for hotel, retail and corporate clients. The design studio specializes in custom design, fabrication and installation. District 219 will be holding an open forum regarding the district’s current financial state on March 13.
District 219 is inviting residents and business owners alike to hear the district’s current financial state. The open forum will take place at Niles West High School, 5701 Oakton St., on March 13 at 7 p.m. The meeting will take place in the south lobby commons. Superintendent Nanciann Gatta will provide an overview of the district’s financial status, including district revenues and expenditures. Niles West gymnastics coach and gym teacher Pam Foerch was voted into the Illinois High School Girls’ Gymnastics Coaches Association Hall of Fame recently.
Niles West physical welfare teacher and girls gymnastics coach Pam Foerch has been voted into the Illinois High School Girls’ Gymnastics Coaches Association Hall of Fame. She will be formally inducted at a ceremonial luncheon during the IHSA Girls Gymnastics State Finals on Feb. 16. “I was in awe when I learned about this,” Foerch said in a press release. “I’m blessed to be so honored by all my peers and the people I’ve been working with all these years. I thank Niles West for the opportunity to work with gymnastics and with all my great students.” Foerch has coached gymnastics since 1979 and began coaching at District 219 in 1989. So, who won Pizza Wars 3? Was it Lincolnwood's Lou Malnati's? Or maybe Morton Grove-based Pequod's. Maybe, just maybe, a Skokie based business took home the coveted prize.
Pizza Wars 3 was a jam-packed success. The event, which started at 6 p.m. on Thursday, was held at Niles West High School. Within half-an-hour of kicking off, there was a line outside the building and some 800 tickets were already purchased. Hosted by District 219's Education Foundation for Excellence, Pizza Wars has come a long way from its humble beginnings. But who won Pizza Wars 3? More than a dozen restaurants competed - some from as far as Wheeling - but in the end, it was downtown Skokie's very own Village Inn. Last year, Jet's Pizza took home the prize as best pizza in the Skokie, Niles, Morton Grove and Lincolnwood area. Pizza Wars 3 is this Jan. 17 and has some new contenders.
The District 219 Education Foundation for Excellence, with the help of the Student Organization Dance Marathon, are getting fired up to host its Third Annual Pizza Wars 3 on Jan. 17 from 6 p.m. to 9 p.m. at the Niles West High School cafeteria at 5701 Oakton St. This year, the war continues between local pizza makers including: De Carlucci's, Edwardo’s, Gulliver’s, Jet’s Pizza, Lou Malnati’s, Nancy's, Organic Life, Papa John’s, Pequod's, Sarpino's, and Village Inn. The contenders are set, but the question remains to be answered by the community: What pizza will be tossed the trophy as the Pizza Wars 3 champion? The Niles Township High School District will not seek an increase in its property tax levy; that means its portion of your property tax bill should not go up.
Taxpayers in Niles Township High School District 219 can breathe a sigh of relief. The district intends to request no increase in property taxes next year, according to school board president Robert Silverman. Silverman brought up the issue of the tax levy – conspicuous by its absence on the agenda – at the Nov. 26 school board meeting. “One of the things that’s missing is our annual levy request,” Silverman said. “The law requires us to publish if we’re seeking more than a 5 percent increase. It is not our intent to seek a levy increase of more than 5 percent; in fact, our intent is not to seek an increase at all. Abesamis, a junior, received the 2012 Gebhardt Award for her story “Students from Ohio School Shooting Share Experiences,” which she wrote last school year for nileswestnews.org. I'm not blaming the students disadvantaged or not. I'm saying that the schools have failed these students. And I don't have any kids, top 1% or bottom. I come from a family of educators.
