Village to Remove 500-700 Trees Due to EAB

The Emerald Ash Borer has infected some 500 to 700 trees. Village Forester Liz Zimmerman explains the process behind removing these trees and the benefits of adding new ones.

While Skokie has a 'growing' tree problem, the village has locked up a favorable rate with an outside contractor and plans on seeing a healthy return on their investment.     According to the village, several hundred trees have been identified with having Emerald Ash Borer (EAB). What is EAB? "It is an invasive beetle from China," said Liz Zimmerman, the village's Forester. "When it is in larva form it tunnels and it severs the tree's vessels. "The tree is then not able to pull up water," she added. "And it makes the tree dehydrate and starve to death." I disagree that this should be any kind of cost-sharing type of expense since it is private property. However, I think it would be nice if there was some sort of discount available for Skokie residents. Our neighbor has a very old tree in their backyard. In over 20 years, the only attempt they made to prune it was when ComEd was trimming trees in the alley and they asked ComEd to put their bucket…   more ›
