More of the Same or Advocate of the People?

Trustee candidate Lisa Lipin said she believe it is imperative to have an open dialogue and real communication between residents and locally elected officials.

My name is Lisa Lipin and I am running for trustee for the Village of Skokie.  I have a proven record of public service that has been motivated by the importance of community, communication and cooperation. I have listened to, and advocated for, people on the local level serving as president of PTAs, chairing nominating committees and serving as a Skokie Commissioner for Consumer Affairs. I have gained experience on the state level working with legislators, state officials, and consumer protection groups, and I have lobbied and worked to write legislation to protect our children against dangerous products. I have worked at the national level to initiate new product safety standards to further protect the health and welfare of all children…

I truly want to vote Independent, but I can't vote in anyone who's going to do it by standing on the backs of long time residents, small property owners and retirees living in Skokie two and three flats. So tell me... are you for or against the so-called Tenant Tax? Let SILA know, and they'll post your answer on their web site, at www.SkokieLandlord.org   more ›

Trustee Candidate Ulrich 'Represents' Skokie

Twenty or 30 years ago, a candidate like Ilonka Ulrich likely would have never been able to run for village trustee, she said. But time has changed things, and the Skokie resident is excited to run this April.

Spend a few minutes with Ilonka Ulrich and you'll realize she's juggling a dozen things at once. Ulrich, who is a single mom, lawyer and of Latin-American descent, said the political world would have "never considered a person of my status running for village trustee 20 or 30 years ago." Ulrich is one of six Caucus Party candidates running for village trustee on April 9. All in all, there are nine contenders, with the other three running as Independents. "You have four women running and that just shows the progression of the Caucus Party," Ulrich said. "I think the mayor is very progressive and conscientious in who is choosing to run with him." Ulrich moved to Skokie from West Rogers Park about 11 years ago, when her son was only two. She …

LIVEBLOG: Follow Along with Local Readers for the Presidential Debate Town Hall

Tuesday's round two between President Barack Obama and Gov. Mitt Romney is Oct. 16 at 8 p.m. Central Time. The town-hall style debate will be moderated by CNN’s Candy Crowley. Patch will liveblog the event for local readers.

The second presidential debate between President Barack Obama and Gov. Mitt Romney is set for 8 p.m. Oct. 16. The debate is at Hofstra University in New York and will be moderated by CNN's Candy Crowley. In the first debate, the candidates focused on domestic issues, including the economy and taxes, health care reform and the role of government.  This second debate between the candidates is a town hall-style debate, including questions from the audience. It will focus on both domestic and international issues and will include questions from voters.  The tradition of holding live town hall debates for presidential candidates began in 1992 and has since proved to be one of the biggest challenges for debaters. Taking questions from the …

Former Lincolnwood Mayor Peter Moy will be running for mayor come 2013. Moy said Lincolnwood has some real issues that need to be addressed.

A first may be in store for Lincolnwood come 2013. Former Lincolnwood trustee and mayor, Peter Moy, will be running for mayoral office during the 2013 election. It marks the first time a former trustee, mayor is running against another former trustee who also happens to be the current mayor of Lincolnwood, Jerry Turry. Moy, who will be celebrating his 57th birthday Thursday, served as a trustee from 1995-2000, then as mayor until 2005. He was the first Asian American to serve any municipality in Illinois as its president, according to the village's website. He also supported Mayor Turry when he stepped down several years ago. On Primary Night, Mitt Romney is Honored in Illinois

Republican presidential hopeful Mitt Romney attends a reception in his honor in Wheaton Tuesday night.

While voters in Skokie, Ill., were out voting for the 2012 primary, Mitt Romney stopped in Wheaton for an unpublicized private reception at a home in the 1400 block of Forest Avenue Tuesday night. Romney, awaiting the results of Illinois' Republican presidential primary, greeted children and other neighbors who gathered outside waving American flags and chanting “Mitt for President!” as he arrived. Neighbors said they received notice of the event earlier this week. Romney was scheduled to travel to Schaumburg for his Illinois election night party. Patch reported earlier: Earlier in March, MyFoxChicago.com reported that Romney planned a fundraiser in Wheaton on primary day, March 20. According to the Wheaton College archives website, Romney…

Lincolnwood School District 74 Referendum Fails

Will School District 74 get to build a new, $25 million Lincoln Hall? Residents took to the ballot box today to voice their approval. We will be posting live results as they come in, so keep checking back here for the final results.

Update - 9:34 p.m. It's official: School District 74's referendum has been defeated, with 2,153 residents voting 'No,' or 91.07 percent, while 211 residents voted 'Yes,' or 8.93 percent. This could mean that property taxes will go down in 2014, but that remains to be seen, as some residents took this referendum as a vote of no confidence against the school board. See full results in the table below. Jewish Republicans See Obama as 1-Termer

Chapter labels president as anti-Israel as it weighs GOP prospects at Skokie gathering.

Between analyzing the electoral prospects of Republican presidential candidates and ridiculing the "level of mental illness among liberal Jews," members of the Republican Jewish Coalition (RJC) gathered in Skokie last week to discuss how they could help defeat President Obama in 2012. The standing-room only crowd came from throughout Illinois to fill a conference room at Holiday Inn, where they listened to political analysts and Republican scholars offer political red meat against Obama, whom one speaker accused of being "more pro-Palestinian than the Palestinians." Michael Menis, president of RJC's Chicago chapter, told Skokie Patch that his group was alarmed at Obama's policies toward Israel. "There's concern in the Jewish community as …
