Top Chef Spearheads Dinner for the Cause

Chris Jones, a contestant on Bravo TV's Top Chef, will serve a one-of-a-kind meal in Grayslake to raise money for the Northern illinois Food Bank.

Diners from throughout Chicagoland can experience a unique menu during Dinner for the Cause, a fundraiser to help fight hunger. Chef Chris Jones, a Grayslake local known from being a contestant on Bravo TV's Top Chef, Moto Restaurant of Chicago and Discovery Channel's Future Foods, teamed up with Mike Pruitt, owner of The Vine Martini and Wine Bar in Grayslake. Tickets for the special seven-course meal paired with wine are $100 each. Only 100 tickets are available. The event will be held on Oct. 20. Proceeds from Dinner for the Cause will support the Northern Illinois Food Bank. The event is sponsored by The Vine, Moto, the GLMV Jaycees, U.S. Foods and Heritage Wines. Students Rush To Help Homeless School Teacher

The Chicago Tribune wrote about Henry Wolfson, a 66-year-old substitute teacher at McCracken Middle School who is now homeless. Now, three former students have started a fundraiser to help their beloved teacher.

The Chicago Tribune's Labor Day story on how a well read, highly regarded substitute teacher in Skokie became homeless may have a silver lining. Henry Wolfson, 66, has been a substitute teacher at McCracken Middle School for 19 years. He moved into a homeless shelter after he could no longer pay rent on his Evanston apartment, the Tribune reports. Wolfson told the Tribune that medical expenses were a big reason why he's now living at a shelter. In light of the story, several of Wolfson's former students have created a fundraiser on GiveForward.com, a website designed to help people overburdened with medical expenses. Gallery: Making Strides Against Breast Cancer

Old Orchard event helps raise awareness and funds to fight the disease.

Hundreds of people attended the North Shore's second annual American Cancer Society's Making Strides Against Cancer walk Sunday. The Skokie-based event was one of several 5k walks held across the Chicagoland area.  Thousands were projected to take part in the awareness and fund raising events. Other walks took place in Hoffman Estates, Libertyville, Wheaton, Aurora, Orland Parkand at Montrose Harbor in Chicago.  Earlier:  More than 250 of such commemorative events take place this year across the country. Sixteen walks occur in Illinois, raising an expected $2.8 million for the cause. Attendees are encouraged to raise a suggested minimum donation of $200, but everyone and anyone is allowed to participate. Pizzerias Battle For Bragging Rights

Pequod's takes top honors at District 219 Foundation's first-ever Pizza Wars

In an epic battle of cheesiness, local pizzerias faced off in the first-ever “Pizza Wars” at Niles West High School Thursday evening. California Pizza Kitchen, Domino’s, Edwardo’s, Graziano’s, Gulliver’s, Lou Malnati’s, Nancy’s, Pequod’s, Sarpino’s and Village Inn – and Aramark, the food service provider for Niles North and West high schools – offered samples of their cheese pizza to more than 250 students, staff and community members. The winner? Pequod’s, 8520 Fernald Avenue, Morton Grove. The District 219 Education Foundation for Excellence sponsored the evening with the help of Dance Marathon, a student organization that raises money for charitable causes.
