Bloggers Wanted: Local Business

Have something to say about the pulse of local businesses?

Skokie is one unique cookie when it comes to local businesses. There’s Westfield Old Orchard Mall and Village Crossing Shopping Center on opposite sides of town. Then there’s also West Dempster Street, which is in the midst of a turnaround. Downtown Skokie is also full of hidden gems. With $8.9 million redevelopment of downtown Skokie, there’s plenty to talk about. Posts can be about what businesses you want to come to certain storefronts, or about an experience you had at your favorite shop. Or, if you're a local business owner, we'd love to hear from you, too. There are no requirements on how many items you need to post or restrictions on what you can write about. Skokie Voice Forum Talks Economic Possibilities

A recent forum laid out the prospects and challenges for village's economy during a recent forum last Wednesday.

There have been recent indications that the economy – which has been so anemic for so long – is beginning to show some signs of life. That being the case, there is hope that Skokie will start to show some results of that. But there is still a lot of work to be done and no one can make any guarantees about the future. That was a theme of a recent meeting on the state of economic development within the village. Upstart community activist group Skokie Voice hosted a gathering last week to discuss the economic challenges facing the village. Approximately 125 people listened to Tom Thompson, Skokie’s Economic Development Coordinator and Ann Tennes, the village’s Marketing and Communications Director, to discuss what is being done from a local …

I agree with Denyse- Skokie has a downtown neighborhood which has a ton of potential for beautification and more livelihood. There is a certain spark which Skokie's downtown lacks. Though there is a Skokie revitalization plan in order to make downtown Skokie more habitable and create more usability for all, it needs more of a "downtown feel." I believe that it takes a community effort in order to…   more ›

Rehabilitation process to start soon. Senator watched the Super Bowl Sunday.

Sen. Mark Kirk’s (R-Highland Park) condition was ungraded to good from fair today as he continues to recover from a stroke suffered Jan. 21, according to a statement from Dr. Richard Fessler, the neurosurgeon treating the senator at Northwestern Memorial Hospital. “Senator Kirk is making good progress in his recovery,” Fessler said. “He has been upgraded to good condition and we anticipate he will be able to start the rehabilitation phase soon. We are very pleased with his continued improvement.” Kirk watched the Super Bowl Sunday as he continues to visit with family and friends. What's the Vision for Downtown Skokie?

Skokie already has a booming retail sector with Westfield Old Orchard and Village Crossing. Yet some obstacles still arise when planning Downtown Skokie's future.

Despite a slew of obstacles in their way, Skokie's development directors have a game plan when it comes to revitalizing their downtown area. First and foremost is a poor economy, in which tightened business lending is contributing to more than a dozen storefront vacancies along both Oakton Street and Lincoln Avenue. Next is the long-established large shopping centers possessing a majority of Skokie’s retail power at the far north and south ends of town, with Westfield Old Orchard and Village Crossing Shopping Center. The long-term vision is a different downtown than has been traditionally conceived, and developed in contrast to the powerful business draws of Old Orchard and Village Crossing.  The process is being recalibrated after the …

Delays Ahead: New Train Stop on Oakton

Local government said the construction of the new Yellow Line stop at Oakton Street and Skokie Boulevard won't be ready until at least April.

Excitement has been abundant regarding the new Oakton stop on the Yellow Line in downtown Skokie. Turns out the excitement is going to have to be put on hold for a while. After the village staff had talked about the new stop being opened sometime right after the first of the year. That deadline then pushed it back to March. Now, officials are saying the new stop won't be open to the public until sometime this Spring. Despite the mild winter, construction has not moved along as quickly as originally hoped. As for when commuters can expect to have access to the station, Skokie Mayor George Van Dusen is now talking about April.  “It is going to be done in April for certain,” Van Dusen said while speaking to the Skokie Caucus Party Monday …

Doctor Upgrades Kirk’s Condition to Fair

Progress continues, according to Dr. Fessler.

Sen. Mark Kirk’s (R-Highland Park) condition has  been upgraded to fair from serious but stable today at Northwestern Memorial Hospital, according to Dr. Richard Fessler, the neurosurgeon who has been treating him.  “Senator Kirk’s recovery is continuing,” Fessler said. “He is alert, talking and responding well to questions. He has been upgraded to fair condition and we are very pleased with his progress.”  Since having the stroke Jan. 21, Kirk has undergone two operations to relieve swelling in his brain. The swelling stabilized Friday. Both surgeries were successful and Fessler has been pleased with the continual progress.  Doctors performed the first operation Jan. 22 when they removed a four by eight inch piece of Kirk’s skull to …

Democrats Overwhelmingly Endorse Schakowsky

Veteran Congresswoman is choice of nearly all.

Rep. Jan Schakowsky (D-Evanston) received the overwhelming endorsement for reelection to her 9th Congressional District seat Sunday from the New Trier Democratic Organization in Winnetka. Schakowsky received 97.2 percent of the vote while Evanston teacher Simon Ribeiro got 2.8 percent. Nearly all of New Trier Township was part of the 10th District before it was redrawn in May by the Illinois General Assembly. Now only Glencoe remains while Winnetka, Northfield, Wilmette and Kenilworth are in the 9th. When it was time for members to argue for the endorsement in the 9th, many expressed their happiness that Schakowsky was now their voice in Congress. “She has been our surrogate Congresswoman for so many years,” former 10thDistrict …

Kirk’s Friend Brings Him Work

Sen. Manchin, Kirk family see signs of improvement.

Sen. Mark Kirk’s (R-Highland Park) best friend in the U.S. Senate thinks it is time for Illinois’s junior senator to get back to work at least on a part-time basis, according to a statement released by Kirk’s office. Sen. Joe Manchin (D-WV) paid Kirk a visit Saturday, giving him not only cards and good tidings from his colleagues, but work to do. “I brought him some work to get done, some proposals to look at and some of the political magazines that have all the news in Washington,” Manchin said. “I brought all the love and best wishes of the Senate to Mark and his family, including cards with good wishes from his colleagues.” Manchin spent Saturday morning with Kirk and his family at Northwestern Memorial Hospital, and gave his own …
