Former Super Bowl Ref Makes the Right Call

Jerry Markbreit has lived in Skokie for 50 years. He's called four NFL Super Bowls, some big college games and one memorable Bears game. Markbreit spoke at the Ethical Humanist Society in Skokie on April 1.

At 77 and just two months removed from right-hip replacement surgery, Jerry Markbreit can’t run up and down the field anymore as the primo NFL referee. But Markbreit, with wife Bobbie, will celebrate their 50th anniversary as Skokie residents April 13. The NFL ref still has the fire in his belly to talk about and teach his craft. And, above all, he has a combination sense of humor and self-confidence to let an audience know he knew in his heart he always got the call right. Nearly 100 members of the Ethical Humanist Society were wowed by Markbreit’s storytelling as part of their regular Sunday morning speaker’s series at the society’s headquarters, 7574 N. Pizza Wars! Crowns Jet's Best Pizza in Town

Area eateries competed Thursday night in an effort to raise funds to help needy students at Niles North and Niles West High School.

Traci-Larson Lee juggles a lot of things as a mother of five. From hosting an Italian exchange student at her home to rescuing local troubled dogs to working full-time at her job at nonprofit AFS-USA. Yet among her many goals is helping hungry and homeless students at Niles North and Niles West High School through District 219's Education Foundation for Excellence. The Education Foundation is a nonprofit charitable organization that aims to provide additional resources outside the scope of the regular school district budget. When brainstorming for creative ideas to generate funds to help hungry students, Lee came up with the idea of Pizza Wars! nearly two years ago. Doctor: Sex Change Treatments Could Start Early in Life

Dr. Loren Schechter is one of less than a handful of doctors in the United States who perform the most delicate surgery in the trans-gender process.

Loren Schechter’s surgical specialty would never be considered the easiest or most commonplace. Only three other surgeons in the United States and perhaps just 20 in the entire world are in the practice. But, going forward, the Morton Grove-based doctor who handles the most difficult part of what he calls “gender-confirmation” surgery – once termed a “sex-change” operation – believes his job may get a bit easier and receive more social acceptance as medical research progresses in coming years.
