Police Department Looking to Hire Cops

More than 300 people apply to join force, fill recent vacancies.

The Skokie Police Department is looking for fresh meat. Well, sort of. The department is looking to hire four officers for vacancies left by the recent retirement of four veterans after receiving approval from village manager Al Rigoni. And while it's still early in the search process, the new officers will have some big shoes to fill once hired; the combined time of active service of the four recent retirees is 130 years. Former deputy chief Russell Van, commander Carl Bock as well as officers Walter Trentadue and Jerry Axel all retired between May and July 2010. That left the department with 105 police officers. In spite of what the Police Department stats and charts are showing, the crime is up in the more serious crimes; You need to look at the percent in each crime category. The overall crime is said to be down. I believe drug crimes and certianly armed robberies have increased. 3 bank robberies on Dempster within a month or so was never heard of 10 years ago. I don't see Police presence on Dempster. …   more ›
