KitchenDaily.com: Skokie's Kaufman's Has Best Bagels in America

KitchenDaily.com, a popular online recipe and news site, recently said Skokie's Kaufman's has the best bagels in America.

You could say the sheer amount of different diversities in Skokie is amazing. At Niles North High School, for example, more than 100 different languages are spoken by students. That being said, the Jewish community is one of the many cultures that has a strong presence in the village. From being the home to the Illinois Holocaust Museum and Education Center  to the many synagogues present. With all that are also restaurants - The Bagel in Old Orchard Mall comes to mind and Emma's Bagel Cafe (formerly Bagel Country) at 9306 Skokie Blvd., are just a few of the many restaurants frequented by the Jewish community. Recently, KitchenDaily.com, a popular online news and recipe site, said Kaufman's Deli has the best bagels in America, ranking them…

A Collection of Small Business Profiles

We profiled four different Skokie based businesses in November: Jack's Restaurant, Kaufman's Deli, Dengeos and American Hoarders. If you missed them, now's the chance to check out how these owners became their own boss.

Last month, we profiled four Skokie small businesses, some of which were nominated from our readers via our Facebook page. We thoguht we'd put that collection together in one piece. The profiles look at the journey each small business owner took to becoming their own boss.  A beloved deli - With Kaufman's facing their first grand opening in several decades, we decided to profile them first.   Kaufman’s started a new chapter in the store’s history about one year following the fire that destroyed the Dempster Street store. The new era for the deli and bakery is reopened its doors on Nov. 5. “It has changed me,” Dworkin said reflecting on the past year. “It has given me a tremendous dose of not being in control of my world. It forced me to be…

Kaufman's Deli Strikes TIF Deal with Village

Kaufman's closed after a devastating fire back in November. The deli recently got a hand from the village and now hopes to reopen this September.

After a devastating fire that left the iconic Skokie deli known as Kaufman’s inoperable, many wondered if the sandwich shop would ever reopen. However, thanks to the latest batch of TIF grants handed out earlier this week by the Skokie Village Board, Kaufman’s is coming back to town. The village board handed out a $150,000 grant to Bette Dworkin, owner of Kaufman’s, as she continues her pursuit of rebuilding the Skokie destination that’s been here for generations. The money specifically comes from the West Dempster TIF District that was created in November 2010. Skokie Community Development Director Tom Thompson explained how the procedure would work in an e-mail to Patch stating that Dworkin will take on and pay for the rehabilitation …

Thank you, Randy, I agree 100%. Kaufman's has been a Skokie landmark. The deli across the street from Kaufman's was strictly kosher (Tel Aviv, then it became Chaim's) and it closed due to a change in demographics. Now, with the new Kaufman's opening (soon, I hope - target date was September 2012 and September's almost over!), it will bring a lot of people who miss Kaufman's back into the area. …   more ›

Is Kaufman's Deli Moving Out of Skokie?

Bette Dworkin, the latest in her family to run the legendary deli, is trying to buy the property and re-open after flirting with moving both in and out of Skokie. The business owner also added her love for her current location.

After a Nov. 6 fire shuttered its longtime Skokie store, Kaufman’s Deli looked at the old Barnum & Bagel site two blocks east and a 9,000-square foot property one mile west in Morton Grove as possible locations in which to re-open. Ultimately, the cost of fixing the long-closed Barnum and & Bagel building and too much space in the Morton Grove storefront for her needs led Kaufman’s president Bette Dworkin back to her original building at 4905 W. Dempster. After renting since 1984, she’s trying to purchase the building in advance of the lease expiration date in August. Installing bathrooms for each gender leads the required list of internal construction projects required if  Dworkin can complete the sale process. The earliest she projected …

Why isn't the Village of Skokie offering up one of the vacant lots along Dempster, that they purchased a few years ago? It would get the ball rolling that much faster, and put at least one of those properties back on the tax rolls. Otherwise it will be years before Skokie can ever get any sort of value back for their investment. Kaufman's would remain on Dempster, and could create their own …   more ›
