Patch Pet Pick

Adopt Me: Tapioca the Creamy White Feline

Skokie Patch regularly features pets available for adoption from C.A.R.E. at Evanston's Animal Shelter.

Snowy white Tapioca has a sad story, but with a soon-to-be-happy ending. Tapioca ended up at C.A.R.E. after being thrown from a car in his carrier--despite being, say C.A.R.E. volunteers, "the nicest, sweetest cat around." "I shook it all off and have opened my heart to the nice volunteers at C.A.R.E.," says Tapioca. "I get lots of compliments on my one blue eye and one amber eye. I'm lovable and like being petted and playing with all kinds of toys! Come to the shelter to meet me and to give me a chance at a great life with a new family." Tapioca's Stats: C.A.R.E. to Meet Tapioca? Please come to C.A.R.E., 2310 Oakton St., Evanston, to meet Tapioca and speak to an adoption counselor. Holiday adoption hours for Christmas week will be …

How We Got a Puppy For Christmas

How do you say no to kids who want a little dog to have a home for the holidays?

It all started when my daughter found out animal shelters allow people to foster a pet-- without having to permanently adopt it. After she pleaded, and I made her sign a contract that said she would walk it in the morning and late at night and do all the feeding and cleaning up, we began to fill out online forms for fostering. PAWS Chicago, a no-kill humane shelter on Clybourn Avenue, was the first to respond, and soon we became the proud foster home of Goldie, a female boxer-pit bull mix. She's three months old.  I have my reservations about pit bulls, but little Goldie has a sweet face and disposition.  My daughter, a teen, spends hours playing with Goldie--whom we now call Bailey--and she and my son do their part taking her for walks …

Skokie Golf Range Named Top 50 in America

The Golf Range Association of America recently named the Skokie Sports Park at 3459 Oakton St. as one of the top 50 golf ranges in America.

While the weather outside is frightful, one of the Skokie Park District's outdoor facilities was recently named a top 50 golf range in America by the Golf Range Association of America, or GRAA. It marks the eleventh time in almost 15 years that the GRAA have named the Skokie Sports Park, located at 3459 Oakton St., as one of the top golf practice centers in America. The Skokie Sports Park range features a two-story, 40 station driving range with a brand new automatic tee-up system. Instead of buying a bucket of balls, golfers insert a debit card, the ball is automatically set, and they swing away. The stations are even heated for winter practice. The GRAA, based in New Canaan, Conn., was formed in 1991. It publishes the industry's leading …

Bob Nowak taught at Oakton Community College and served as the Village of Skokie's director of fiance since 1991. He is now playing a similar role with the community college in 2012 and beyond.

A Skokie resident was selected as Oakton Community College's vice president of business finance recently. Bob Nowak's name might sound familiar: He served as director of finance for the Village of Skokie from 1991 to December 2012. Prior to that, he was an accountant for several private companies. “I am very excited about joining the Oakton family,” Nowak said. “Community colleges play an increasingly vital role here in Illinois and across the country, creating a skilled workforce and providing educational opportunities to the broadest possible spectrum. The Street Singer – a semi-autobiographical account of how a struggling street entertainer became an unlikely player in bringing the Brooklyn Nets to the Barclay’s Arena – was written by Skokie native Stephen Witt. Witt attended Lincoln Jr. High and later Niles East High School. The Street Singer follows subway musician Jason Spirit as he stumbles into contact with Thaddeus Hoover, a high-powered developer with a plan to build a huge arena in Brooklyn and also bring in the first major professional sports team since the Brooklyn Dodgers. Spirit ends up pitting the key players and opponents against each other as he plots to get a song he’s written to a famous rapper who’s heavily involved in the development of the project.
