Nominees for Patch Athlete of the Week: Niles West's Jewell Loyd, Deerfield's Danny Katz, Glenbrook North's Mark Johnson, Highland Park's Jake Norcia, Loyola Academy's Kathleen Stralka.
More than 8,000 votes were cast in last week's competition and Deerfield's Artie Bess was named Patch Athlete of the Week. The nominees for Patch Athlete of the Week, Feb. 20 - Feb. 26: Kathleen Stralka, senior, girl’s basketball, Loyola Academy – Stralka scored a team-high 10 points in Loyola’s 31-26 win over Glenbrook South. The victory gave the Ramblers the Class 4A New Trier Sectional championship and Loyola advanced to play Wheeling in the Stevenson Super-Sectional. Danny Katz, senior, boys track, Deerfield – Katz won the long jump, triple jump and 55-meter intermediate hurdles at the Buffalo Grove quad last week. In another big turnout, see who took home this week's honor as Athlete of the Week!
More than 12,000 votes were cast in last week's contest for Athlete of the Week and Loyola's Michelle Ricolcol came out the winner. Ricolcol scored 14 points – all in the second half – to lead the Ramblers to a 47-40 win over St. Ignatius on Dec. 16. That brought Loyola Academy's record to 8-2 overall and 3-0 in the Girls Catholic Athletic Conference. Ricolcol garnered more than 9,000 votes or 74 percent of all ballots cast. The rest of last week's nominees were: Jacqui Grant, junior, girls basketball, Maine South – Grant had 17 points and 10 rebounds against CSL South-leading Glenbrook South in a 45-39 victory last week. The nominees for Patch Athlete of the Week, Dec. 12 - Dec. 18: Jacqui Grant, junior, girls basketball, Maine South – Grant had 17 points and 10 rebounds against CSL South-leading Glenbrook South in a 45-39 victory last week. The win over the previously undefeated Titans vaulted the Hawks into a tie for the CSL South lead. Vaughn Monreal-Berner, junior, wrestling, Niles West – Monreal-Berner took home the title in the 182-pound weight class at the Lake Park Ralph W. Krupke Classic last weekend. The Niles West junior is now 17-3 on the season and is looking to get to the state championships after getting to sectionals last year. The nominees for Patch Athlete of the Week, Nov. 21- Nov. 27 are: Erin Purdy, senior, girls diving, Deerfield – Purdy captured the state championship in the diving competition with a total of 405.95 points. She became Deerfield’s second diving state champion, following Christina Loukas, who won three straight years from 2001-2003. Purdy had finished in the top five as a sophomore and junior, but finally topped the podium in her last year. The following are nominees for Nov. 7- Nov. 13: Alli Mack, senior, field hockey and karate, Glenbrook South – Mack recently took third place at the World Shotokan Karate Championships back in September. She is a nine-time state champion in karate and has three bronze and three silver medals from the Junior Olympics. In the Fall, Mack was the captain of Glenbrook South’s field hockey squad and made the all-state team. Caroline Grant, senior, girls diving, New Trier – Grant won the diving competition at the Glenbrook South sectional championships, leading New Trier to an easy team victory. Athlete of the Week for Oct. 31 - Nov. 6: Peter Pujals ran away with North Shore's first contest for Patch Athlete of the Week. More than 2,300 readers voted last week, but the junior football player from Loyola Academy received 1233 votes, capturing 54 percent of the total. (See results below) The nominees for North Shore Patch Athlete of the Week, Oct. 31- Nov. 6, were: Peter Pujals, junior, football wide receiver, Loyola Academy and this week’s winner – Pujals had the best game of his career, catching nine passes for 181 yards in Loyola’s 29-0 win over Dunbar in the second round of the playoffs. The nominees for North Shore Patch Athlete of the Week, Oct. 31- Nov. 6: Alexis Melchiorre, senior, girls swimming, Deerfield – Melchiorre helped lead Deerfield to a third consecutive Central Suburban League North swimming championship last weekend. The senior won the 50 freestyle in 24.74 seconds and doubled up by taking first place in the 100 free (54.55). Melchiorre was also the anchor for the Warriors’ 400 free relay team that edged Glenbrook North for the win. Leland Later, senior, boys cross country, New Trier – Later became only the third New Trier cross country state champion in the school’s history by winning the Class 3A state title in Peoria last weekend.
