Following a disruptive pep rally at Niles West High School, school administration recently made changes to this year's prom, making some students question whether or not they want to attend.
Due to the actions of a group of Niles West seniors, everyone attending Niles West High School's prom will face stricter conditions. The move comes after a disruptive pep rally held at the school on April 19, where tires were thrown through the rally floor and silly string and noise reached such a point of disrespect that principal Kaine Osburn ended the day's activities early. Now, all juniors and seniors are being punished, even those that did not attend. District 219 will be holding an open forum regarding the district’s current financial state on March 13.
District 219 is inviting residents and business owners alike to hear the district’s current financial state. The open forum will take place at Niles West High School, 5701 Oakton St., on March 13 at 7 p.m. The meeting will take place in the south lobby commons. Superintendent Nanciann Gatta will provide an overview of the district’s financial status, including district revenues and expenditures. A 73-year-old man that robbed a Niles bank told police that he wanted to go back to prison because he felt most comfortable there, the Associated Press reported.
Seventy-three-year-old Walter Unbehaun has six months to live. So, the South Carolina man who uses a cane to walk decided it would be best to serve his final days behind prison, at least according to a story by the Associated Press. Unbehaun, who had spent most of his life behind bars, said he was hoping he would get caught. Unbehaun told investigators that he had spent the majority of his life in prison and "felt more comfortable in prison than out," according to the AP. Unbehaun served 10 years for a 1998 bank robbery and committed many other felonies, according to the AP. Unbehaun made a court appearance Monday before U.S. Magistrate Geraldine Soat, according to an FBI statement, and remains in federal custody pending his next court …

A 73-year-old man was arrested outside a motel in North Chicago after he robbed a bank on Sunday. The suspect told a teller that he had "six months to live."
After a Niles bank was robbed Saturday, FBI agents and Niles Police charged Walter Unbehaun, 73, of Rock Hill, S.C., the very next day. Unbehaun was charged with one count of bank robbery, a felony, in a criminal complaint filed Monday with the U.S. District Court. If convicted, he could face up to 20 years in prison. According to an FBI statement, the complaint said Unbehaun drove to the area of BMO Harris Bank, 7707 W. Dempster St. in neighboring Niles on Saturday morning. He then entered the bank, approached a teller and presented a note announcing a robbery. Party City moved from Skokie to neighboring Niles early last week.
Party City relocated to 5651 Touhy Ave. in Village Crossing early last week. A spokesman for the company said the store was seeking a larger space. Village Crossing is split between Skokie and Niles. So, who won Pizza Wars 3? Was it Lincolnwood's Lou Malnati's? Or maybe Morton Grove-based Pequod's. Maybe, just maybe, a Skokie based business took home the coveted prize.
Pizza Wars 3 was a jam-packed success. The event, which started at 6 p.m. on Thursday, was held at Niles West High School. Within half-an-hour of kicking off, there was a line outside the building and some 800 tickets were already purchased. Hosted by District 219's Education Foundation for Excellence, Pizza Wars has come a long way from its humble beginnings. But who won Pizza Wars 3? More than a dozen restaurants competed - some from as far as Wheeling - but in the end, it was downtown Skokie's very own Village Inn. Two hair stylists in Skokie talk about security precautions - such as keeping their doors locked at all times - after the hair salon bandit robbed three area salons in a two-week span.
Despite the store being open, walk up to Hair Cuttery in Village Crossing and expect the doors to be locked. It's a security precaution the employees have taken since the hair salon bandit has robbed three area salons - two in Skokie, one in Niles - in two weeks. "We started locking our doors on Monday," said Hair Cuttery stylist Dyana Kheyo, 22. "We're terrified. Our customers are terrified. They know what's been going on. It's been all over the news." The newly minted boxes remind customers that buying Girl Scout cookies is more than just an exchange of money for product. The young Girl Scout entrepreneurs learn key business skills that carry them into adulthood.
