What is the difference between a semiautomatic and automatic weapon? Is the AR-15 more deadly than a revolver?
I've been hearing a lot about how we need to ban assault weapons, but I'm finding that the same misinformation that was floated back in 1994 is being used once against to ramp up hysteria around semi-automatic rifles. So, the following is an explanation of terms and general discussion of the folly of so-called "assault weapon" bans. Assault Weapons: What is an assault weapon? Well, the truthful answer is that there is no such thing as an assault weapon. The term was fabricated by gun control groups and the media to describe semi-automatic rifles that had 2 or more cosmetic features such as pistol grips and telescoping stocks - such as civilian versions of the AR-15 and AK47. The term was created to intentionally cause confusion among the …

President Barack Obama was reelected this week.
President Barack Obama won a second term this week, winning by a wide margin in the electoral colllege and winning more than 50 percent of the popular vote. The 2012 election was unique for many reasons. It was the first presidential election since the Citizens United Supreme Court ruling. The ruling allowed unlimited donations to flow to so-called super PACs. Slate reported that the super PACs spent a total of $1 billion on the campaign. Obama was reelected despite a relatively high unemployment rate of 7.9 percent. Business Week noted that not since FDR has a president been reelected with such a high unemployment rate. The result was not a surprise to everyone. The New York Times' Nate Silver predicted Obama had a better than 90 percent …

Iowa voters have until 9 p.m. to cast their Election 2012 ballots, but voting in other key swing states ends as much as three hours before then, and exit polling could provide an early indication of whether President Obama or Mitt Romney wins the White House. The earliest key state to watch for is Virginia, where polls close at 6 p.m. Iowa time. Voting ends 30 minutes later in swing states Ohio and North Carolina. At 7 p.m. swing states Florida, Pennsylvania and New Hampshire close their polls. Nevada, the final swing state that could prove as pivotal as Iowa, also closes its voting at 9 p.m.

Chapter labels president as anti-Israel as it weighs GOP prospects at Skokie gathering.
Between analyzing the electoral prospects of Republican presidential candidates and ridiculing the "level of mental illness among liberal Jews," members of the Republican Jewish Coalition (RJC) gathered in Skokie last week to discuss how they could help defeat President Obama in 2012. The standing-room only crowd came from throughout Illinois to fill a conference room at Holiday Inn, where they listened to political analysts and Republican scholars offer political red meat against Obama, whom one speaker accused of being "more pro-Palestinian than the Palestinians." Michael Menis, president of RJC's Chicago chapter, told Skokie Patch that his group was alarmed at Obama's policies toward Israel. "There's concern in the Jewish community as …

Neo-Nazi case in '70s casts national perspective on New York City dispute
It's a heated debate that's putting Skokie back under the national spotlight. Should Muslims have the right to build a mosque near the former site of the World Trade Center in New York City? The hot topic has many debating the First Amendment, with news organizations referring to the fight between the Village of Skokie and a neo-Nazi group in offering some perspective. In 1976, the National Socialist Party of America filed a request with the village to march in Skokie, whose large Jewish population included many Holocaust survivors from World War II. The village fought back, saying the march targeted and intimidated a large section of its residents. The freedom of expression case eventually went to the U.S. Supreme Court, which reversed …
