How Different Can Skokie Look in Two Years?

Many changes that took place last year are slated to take effect as early as next year. Some of those changes include the construction of a Super Walgreens, a proposed Super Walmart and an XSport Fitness. There's also a new train station.

Skokie just might become a super shopping destination for the entire North Shore, as well as neighboring parts of Chicago. Developer Clark Street proposed building a Super Walmart near the intersection of Touhy Avenue and McCormick Boulevard. The big-box retailer would be surrounded by two banks, a medical facility and small retail outlets like cell phone stores and sandwich shops. The project already has been dubbed "Touhy Marketplace." The development will bring about $1 million in sales tax revenue annually, according to village officials. More recently, an XSport Fitness health club was proposed to replace the vacant Chicago Cycle also near Touhy and McCormick. The 24-hour gym would be next door to Touhy Marketplace, Lincolnwood Mall …

Westfield Old Orchard Planning $10 Million Facelift

Despite stalls over signage restrictions, the village is pleased with renovation plans. .

Turn on an oldies station and Brenton Wood’s 1968 hit “Give Me A Little Sign” will inevitably be played. The title of that song could have been the sentiment Thursday night at Skokie’s Plan Commission meeting. The mall’s owner, Westfield Corp., easily got permission for most parts of a $10 million renovation of Skokie’s massive shopping center, the first major Old Orchard Mall facelift since 1994. However, a request for a 48 by 16 foot sign on Old Orchard Road was not recommended, echoing the suggestion of the village staff. A decades long …

Just happened to have driven East from Harms toward Old Orchard at 6pm yesterday. One cannot see the current Westfield sign until literally right upon it. The gas station traffic and it's canopy are clearly an obstruction. Plus it's a short, brick wall that just says Westfield. Which could be a nursing home as far as a first time customer (the target goal) might know. Adding size, height and the …   more ›
