Crosstown Classic: West vs North Basketball

Niles West's girls basketball team lost its first game of the season and both gymnastics teams are starting off their season.

Just like last year, Niles West swept Niles North in the Crosstown Classic with both the boys and girls basketball teams recording victories. In the boys game, Niles West edged the Vikings 60-57 at home thanks to a 13-5 run late in the fourth quarter. Ahmad Gibson had 15 points to lead Niles West while Malachi Nix had a game-high 25 points, including 17 in the fourth quarter. On the girls side things were a little less dramatic. Jewell Loyd scored 39 points and Niles West outpaced the Vikings 49-38. Niles West came back from a nine-point deficit at halftime as Loyd put up 26 points in the second half. Prep Sports Roundup: Basketball Teams Look Ahead to Conference Play

Jewell Loyd and Niles West remain undefeated in non-conference basketball play.

NILES WEST Girls Basketball: Niles West moved to 7-0 on the season with a 49-35 victory over Highland Park on Nov. 29. Jewell Loyd scored 36 points in the victory and the Wolves rallied from an early 9-6 deficit after the first quarter. Led by Dashae Shumate’s defensive effort, Niles West held Highland Park’s Lena Munzer to only four points after she had averaged more than 30 points per game over the Giants’ first five contests. Boys Basketball: Niles West finished its Thanksgiving tournament with a record of 1-3. The Wolves played without returning starters Alek Biser (leg) and Nathan Sagett (ankle). Senior D.J. High School Playoffs Roundup: Wolves and Vikings Finish Fall Seasons

Both volleyball teams lost in the regional finals, but Niles West's boys cross country team advanced to the state championships in Peoria.

Girls Volleyball: Both Niles North and Niles West fell in the regionals finals of the Class 4A playoffs. The Vikings fell 25-11, 25-17 to No. 1 seed New Trier while Niles West couldn’t get over the hump against Loyola falling 25-22, 25-22 in two close games. The Wolves’ early playoff exit comes one season after Niles West advanced all the way to the sectional final. Last season they set the school record for wins and came up one short of equaling that mark in 2011 with a 23-12 record. Even with the loss to top-seeded New Trier, Niles North did set a school record with 23 wins during the season. The Vikings carried only two seniors on the varsity team this season so they will look to 2012 with high expectations.     Boys Cross Country: With…

High School Playoff Roundup: Vikings and Wolves Honored in CSL

Niles North and Niles West had athletes honored on the all-conference football and soccer teams.

Football: After playing in a reserve role to Sam Sharples last season, RB Oshayne Brown emerged to become a big-time offensive force for Niles North in 2011. Brown was named the Offensive Player of the Year for the CSL North. In addition to Brown, Niles North DT Dan Fricano, LB Romeo Montrel, DT James Edmond and LB Juvane Spence made the all-conference team. Edmond, a sophomore, along with juniors Fricano and Spence will anchor the Vikings’ defense next year. Niles West’s Jeremiah Jordan and LB James Williams were both named to the CSL South All-Conference team. Both juniors will return to play for the Wolves next season. Niles HS Sports Roundup: Vikings Get Two Key Volleyball Victories

Niles West beat Niles North 1-0 in the boys soccer regional semifinals.

NILES NORTH Volleyball: The Vikings rallied to beat Deerfield at home on Oct. 13 19-25, 25-20, 25-14. Andrea Lopez led the team with nine kills for the match while Taylor Louis chipped in with eight kills as well. Niles North got a big lift from Alethea Busch, who had four kills and a block in the decisive third game. Niles North also used a three-set rally to defeat Maine West 20-25, 25-11, 25-20 on Oct. 18. Lopez had 13 kills while Louis had 12 kills and two blocks. The Vikings improved to 21-13 on the season, including 7-2 in the Central Suburban League North and earned the No. 8 seed in the Class 4A Glenview Sectional. Niles West Sports Roundup: Fall Teams Gear Up For Postseason

Two Niles West golfers advanced to the sectional championships while tennis finished fourth in the Central Suburban League South.

Girls Tennis: Niles West finished tied for fourth overall in the CSL South this season after a strong showing in the final regular season tournament. The Wolves accrued 16 points over the course of the season’s dual meets and season-ending tournament, finishing behind champion New Trier (54), Glenbrook South (44) and Maine South (31). Niles West tied Evanston and beat out Waukegan (.5). The Wolves’ No. 1 doubles team of Alexa Bits and Kristine Park was the top-scoring team for Niles West at the CSL South tournament, finishing third after a win over Evanston’s Lydia Collins and Caroline Cary. Volleyball rebounds after a tough weekend tourney, football loses to a top-ranked team.

Girls Tennis: The Vikings went 1-2 last week, beating Maine West, but losing to Maine South and Deerfield. Senior captain Erica Markovitz continues to the lead Vikings, going 2-1 in her matches on the week. “Erica is playing her smartest tennis this year,” Niles North coach John Amaro said. “Her willingness to battle has always been high; now she is analyzing her opponents well, and it is paying off.” Markovitz lost to Deerfield 6-2, 6-2, but gave up a total of three games in her two match victories over Maine South and Maine West. Niles West Sports Roundup: Boys Golf Continues to Impress

Football loses a chance to go 3-1 while Edan Scott wins 2 swimming events for the Wolves.

Boys Golf: Niles West split its two dual matches last week, defeating Waukegan before losing to Central Suburban League (CSL) South rival New Trier. Nate Lee took home medalist honors, shooting a 37 in the Wolves’ 161-176 win over Waukegan. But Niles West couldn’t hang with New Trier, losing 152-166. The Wolves finished 14th in the 25-team Chevy Chase Invitational on Sept. 17. The Wolves shot 340, beating fellow CSL South teams Evanston (344) and Maine South (353). Lake Forest won the tournament by shooting a 301. Niles West was only eight shots outside of the top 10. Boys Cross-Country: Before each race, Niles North cross-country coach Dan Horyn draws up a best-case and a worst-case scenario for his team. He doesn’t share it with his runners or use it to motivate them; it’s just something he does. With his team running at the competitive Woodruff Invitational held at the state cross-country course, Horyn once again wrote out the possibilities. Niles West Sports Roundup: Boys Golf Rides Hot Streak

Volleyball wins the Skokie Skirmish while football puts itself in a position for a playoff spot.

Boys Golf - Early in the season, Niles West continues to pile up the golf accolades. The Wolves won two Central Suburban League (CSL) South dual matches last week and followed it up with a ninth-place finish at the Zion-Benton Invitational. Nick Hester has had a number of stellar rounds for the Wolves, taking medalist honors in Niles West’s victories over Evanston and Maine South. Hester shot 36 in the team's 158-166 win against Evanston and fired a 33 in the 139-150 win against Maine South a day later. Both matches were held at Willow Hill Course Golf.
