Founder and chair of Skokie Voice Lisa Lipin will be stepping down from her position come January. She is seeking a trustee role with the village this April.
Some minor and big changes will be happening at Skokie Voice in the coming weeks. Recently, the group held its annual meeting. "The annual meeting is a time to connect with membership," said Skokie Voice Chair Lisa Lipin. "It was a brief meeting." Seymour Schwartz was elected to another term on the board of directors. Rebecca Rubin was elected for the first time as a board director. Meanwhile, Brian Novak will be resigning from his position as board member on Dec. 31. Both him and Lipin are running as independents for trustee this April. Lipin will also step down from her current position as chair come Jan. 1, she said. Skokie Voice started off with about a dozen members. Now, the grassroots group has hundreds of local residents that share their cause. Tonight, Monday Dec. 10, the group will be hosting their annual meeting.
More than two years ago, a dozen or so people started a grassroots movement to improve communication between the Village of Skokie and its residents. That group has since blossomed, and has been a driving force regarding a variety of issues, from local crime to property taxes and even schools, among other things. Their presence was most notably known on July 24, 2010, when the group hosted a town hall forum at Niles West High School. The turnout was far bigger than anyone expected, as the auditorium was packed to the brim. Grass-roots community group Skokie Voice has shared information regarding the proposed multi-unit ordinance. Check out these important meeting dates and information regarding the multi-unit proposal.
From the community ~ The Village of Skokie is considering initiating a multi-unit rental licensing program. Within the Village there are approximately 1,200 multi-unit buildings providing 5,000 units of rental housing. The Village is pursuing licensing as a proactive and preventative initiative to strengthen the communication and partnership between landlords and the Village. Licensing of multi-unit buildings is quite common in the Chicago metropolitan area. The Village's Public Safety Commission hosted two public hearings on April 18 and May 14, 2012 regarding the proposal. Crime and traffic safety were the big issues discussed at Skokie Voice's open forum last week. According to an unscientific survey released by the group, almost half of the participants said Skokie is less safe than it was 3-5 years ago.
Many Skokie citizens have been alarmed by two very high profile crimes in recent weeks. When shots are fired near a train station or a 9-year-old is killed, tensions are inevitably going to rise. Such emotion served as the backdrop of a meeting on public safety last week. Approximately 150 people attended an open forum hosted by upstart community group Skokie Voice to get an overview on security in the village. Village Manager Al Rigoni, Police Chief Anthony Scarpelli and Trustee Randy Roberts all fielded questions. Not only were the aforementioned incidents on attendee’s minds, an unscientific survey of 293 people generated by Skokie Voice indicated that 47.7 percent of respondents believe the village is less safe than it was 3-5 years …

While the choices were limited to three, the race for best Thai food in Skokie was between two restaurants. More than 370 votes were cast in this week's Readers' Choice, but in the end Beyond Thai came out on top, capturing 214 votes, or 57 percent. Tub Tim Thai came in a close second with 145 votes, or 39 percent. The menu at Beyond Thai, 4654 Church St., "features a wide array of classic and innovative new creations." Our food critic also praised this BYOB restaurant, and even said the sweet and sour sauces were among the best she'd ever had. Stay tuned next Monday as we nominate our next Readers' Choice business. A recent forum laid out the prospects and challenges for village's economy during a recent forum last Wednesday.
There have been recent indications that the economy – which has been so anemic for so long – is beginning to show some signs of life. That being the case, there is hope that Skokie will start to show some results of that. But there is still a lot of work to be done and no one can make any guarantees about the future. That was a theme of a recent meeting on the state of economic development within the village.
