Students Rush To Help Homeless School Teacher

The Chicago Tribune wrote about Henry Wolfson, a 66-year-old substitute teacher at McCracken Middle School who is now homeless. Now, three former students have started a fundraiser to help their beloved teacher.

The Chicago Tribune's Labor Day story on how a well read, highly regarded substitute teacher in Skokie became homeless may have a silver lining. Henry Wolfson, 66, has been a substitute teacher at McCracken Middle School for 19 years. He moved into a homeless shelter after he could no longer pay rent on his Evanston apartment, the Tribune reports. Wolfson told the Tribune that medical expenses were a big reason why he's now living at a shelter. In light of the story, several of Wolfson's former students have created a fundraiser on GiveForward.com, a website designed to help people overburdened with medical expenses. The former students, Adam Youhanna, Christina Audisho and Anita Zaia have left a message on the page: Let's help the best …

And a Movie

'Tron: Legacy' is Digital Fluff in a Digital World

Don't think about it too hard, but the second installment is awesome.

Let's face the facts, Tron: Legacy is by no means a great movie. As an eye-sizzling CGI spectacle, however, it's simply amazing. We're talking about a remake of a B-grade 1980s sci fi that very few people actually liked in the first place. Yet, for all the neon-suited gimmickries and slick, overwhelming CGI there are two worthwhile performances here, amazingly both by Jeff Bridges, who plays the sagely Jedi-like creator of the Tron world and his un-aging alter ego, the tyrannical "program" Clu. This de-aging transformation is truly astonishing, if only …

Controversy Stirs Over Former Police Station

Skokie group urges trustees to allow public at table in future talks about site.

A potential conflict between the upstart Skokie Voice committee and the village board may be emerging regarding the future of the former police station at 8350 Laramie Ave. At Monday's board meeting, Lisa Lipin, chairwoman of the advocacy group, presented an open letter stating Skokie Voice would like to have a public meeting between residents and trustees about how the property would be developed. Village officials continue to wait for the results of an appraisal of the two-story building that sits at the three-way intersection of Main Street, Lincoln Avenue and Laramie. A Skokie spokeswoman told Patch last month that the police department planned to keep ownership of the garage and parking lot east of Laramie. "The hearing would also …

I don't understand how Skokie Voice's request to keep residents informed is in any way controversial. "A potential conflict between the upstart Skokie Voice committee and the village board may be emerging ...." Really!? Why would anyone assume that two groups desiring the same purpose - keeping Skokie a great community in which to live and work - would be headed towards a conflict if one group …   more ›
