1st West Nile Death Reported in Cook County

An elderly person died from West Nile Virus in southern suburban Cook County, officials said Wednesday. Meanwhile, Skokie has had two confirmed cases of WNV in 2012.

The West Nile virus has claimed the life of an elderly person in southern suburban Cook County, officials announced Wednesday. So far, there has been one death and 58 human cases of the virus in suburban Cook, according to the Cook County Department of Public Health. More than 360 mosquito pools and seven birds also have tested positive. Cook County health officials said the person who died was between the ages of 70-79 and lived in the county's southern district. Officials no longer disclose the gender of WNV patients and provide only the age range. Glenview Man Confirmed With West Nile Virus

While Skokie has two confirmed cases of West Nile Virus, a nearby Glenview man is also said to have contracted WNV. The total number of known cases in Illinois stands at 11 for the year.

Glenview is the latest north Chicago suburb to confirm a human case of West Nile Virus, Village officials confirmed today. A 74-year-old Glenview man showed the onset of symptoms beginning July 31. Skokie reported its second case of WNV on Aug. 15. The total number of known cases in Illinois currently stands at 11 this year.  When Patch spoke with the North Shore Mosquito Abatement District last week, spokesperson Dave Zazra confirmed the case but did not provide additioal details.  Prior to this most recent case in Glenview, an elderly woman was hospitalized in Skokie and mosquitos have tested positive in Northbrook and Morton Grove.  There have been 11 total cases reported in Illinois this year. Second Case of West Nile Confirmed in Skokie

The second case of West Nile Virus was confirmed today by the Village of Skokie. This brings the total number of known cases in Illinois to six this year.

The Village of Skokie confirmed a second case of West Nile Virus today, bringing the number of total known cases in Illinois to six this year. A spokesperson from the village couldn't be immediately reached for comment. It is unclear how old or how serious the second case of WNV is.  On June 30, the Village of Skokie confirmed that the virus was in fact present after a mosquito pool tested positive. On Aug. 3, the village stated that a 76-year-old woman was hospitalized as a result of WNV.  With the detection of West Nile Virus, and the continued hot summer weather creating an ideal environment for mosquito breeding. Confirmed: Skokie Woman Hospitalized With West Nile

A 76-year-old woman is in the hospital with West Nile Virus. Meanwhile, this marks the third confirmed case of WNV in Illinois this year. Information on symptoms and prevention can also be found here.

The Village of Skokie Health Department confirmed the first human case of West Nile Virus today.  Officials would not release the name, but said the 76-year-old Skokie woman is hospitalized from possibly being bitten by a mosquito in the village. This is the third confirmed case of West Nile Virus in the state this year, officials said. On June 30, the Village of Skokie confirmed that the virus was in fact present after a mosquito pool tested positive.
