New Rules Approved to Minimize Injury to High School Football Players

A forum on preventing football head injuries hosted by State Rep. Carole Sente will be held at Vernon Hills High School on Monday, Feb. 25.

The National Federation of State High School Associations (NFHS) recently approved new rules for the 2013 football season in an effort to minimize player injuries related to helmets coming off during games. As a follow-up to last year’s rules change requiring players to sit out one play if their helmet comes off while the ball is live, the NFHS Football Rules Committee approved three additional rules that are extensions of that change. “Player safety has been and will continue to be the top priority for members of the NFHS Football Rules Committee,” said Brad Garrett, chair of the NFHS Football Rules Committee and assistant executive director of the Oregon School Activities Association. “These rules changes regarding helmet-less players …

Niles North Athletics Starting to Take Shape

School hires first assistant athletic director to help bolster sports programs.

In the past, you could have called Karl Costello a jack-of-all-trades. About 10 years ago, Costello, 56, began his career at Niles North High School where there was no formal athletic director. As the "director of physical well-being," Costello was responsible for the physical education, health and driver's education programs. And that was on top of directing the athletics program. But the athletic culture has changed and improved rapidly, Costello said. And now Megan Wojtulewicz has been hired as the school's first assistant athletic director in its history. "The main reason for this is that the expectations for athletics have increased within the district," Costello said. "We're doing a lot of things that we weren't doing 10 years ago." …

I think Erik Osterman in frosh swimming is an up and commer; he is hard-working and approaches his practices with a clear head and determination. I think he may be a sleeper in the North swimming team in the next three years.   more ›
