More than 8,000 votes were cast in last week's competition and Deerfield's Artie Bess was named Patch Athlete of the Week. The nominees for Patch Athlete of the Week, Feb. 20 - Feb. 26: Kathleen Stralka, senior, girl’s basketball, Loyola Academy – Stralka scored a team-high 10 points in Loyola’s 31-26 win over Glenbrook South. The victory gave the Ramblers the Class 4A New Trier Sectional championship and Loyola advanced to play Wheeling in the Stevenson Super-Sectional. Danny Katz, senior, boys track, Deerfield – Katz won the long jump, triple jump and 55-meter intermediate hurdles at the Buffalo Grove quad last week. After more than 8,000 votes were cast, Deerfield's Artie Bess was named Patch Athlete of the Week. Bess took third place in the 220-pound division at the Class 3A wrestling state championships last weekend. Bess beat Mt. Carmel junior David Denne 3-1 in the third-place match and finished the season with a record of 40-2. He garnered 5,079 votes, or 61 percent. HONORABLE MENTION Lauren Kriz, senior, girl’s basketball, Loyola Academy – Kriz tallied 14 points and 10 rebounds in the Ramblers’ 46-31 win over Evanston in the Class 4A Evanston Regional finals. More than 48,000 ballots were received last week and North Shore Country Day's Austin Curren came out on top, winning Athlete of the Week. The nominees for North Shore Patch Athlete of the Week, Feb. 6 - Feb. 12: Christine Stitcher, junior, girls gymnastics, Deerfield – Stitcher qualified for the state meet for the second year in a row. The Deerfield junior recorded a 36.825 in the all-around and also qualified in floor and uneven bars at the Niles North Sectional. The state meet will be held next week at Palatine High School. M.J. Pritchard, junior, wrestling, New Trier – Pritchard qualified for the wrestling state championships by taking third place in the 113-pound division of the Class 3A Barrington Sectional. More than 300 votes were cast last week and Glenbrook South's Molly McDonagh claimed the title of Athlete of the Week. The nominees for Patch Athlete of the Week, Jan. 16 - Jan. 22: Zach Cole, senior, boys bowling, Deerfield – Cole took third place at the sectional championships with a 1332 in his six-game series. The senior led Deerfield to a third-place team finish and qualified as an individual for the state championship. More than 15,000 votes were counted last week and Deerfield's Alex Sacks was proclaimed this week's Athlete of the Week. Sacks scored a game-high 19 points in the Warriors’ 67-52 non-conference victory over Wheeling. The senior had four points in the fourth quarter to lead Deerfield in a late-game comeback. The Deerfield basketball star received more than 7,500 votes, or about 48 percent. The nominees for Patch Athlete of the Week, Dec. 5- Dec. 11: Michael Alfieri, sophomore, boys basketball, Deerfield – Alfieri was one of the main reasons Deerfield handed CSL North rival Glenbrook North its first loss of the season. The standout sophomore scored 13 points, grabbed five rebounds and dished out three assist in the Warriors’ 48-42 overtime win. Patch Athlete of the Week, Nov. 21- Nov. 27: Erin Purdy is this week's Patch Athlete of the Week. Garnering about 56 percent of the vote, Purdy topped a deep field that included local basketball and football players. There were nearly 10,000 votes, but Purdy's state championship win in diving gave her the edge and made her this week's winner.
