Oakton Community College Closed Wednesday, April 24

Oakton Community College will remain closed due to flooding in Des Plaines, according to a spokesperson.

Oakton Community College's Des Plaines campus will remain closed due to flooding on Tuesday and Wednesday, April 23-24, according to a spokesperson. Janet Spector-Bishop stated in an email to Patch that the campus in Skokie would be open, but many events at the campus in Des Plaines were rescheduled or canceled. The community college was closed on Thursday because of the storm water. Updates on the impact of the flood are being posted on Oakton Community College's website, Spector-Bishop stated. Related:

Local Landscape Painters Show at Oakton Art Museum

The works of two Illinois landscape artists are on display at the Koehnline Museum of Art in Des Plaines until Jan. 25.

The following information was submitted by Steve Repsys, spokesperson for Oakton Community College: You may never envision nature the same way after viewing Nuances of Landscape: Paintings by Mary Porterfield and Nina Weiss, which features two local painters with very distinct approaches to capturing scenery. The exhibition is on display at Oakton Community College’s Koehnline Museum of Art, 1600 E. Golf Road, Des Plaines, through Friday, Jan. 25. Porterfield’s works question what makes an act heroic in the midst of circumstances beyond our control, symbolized in her pieces by natural phenomena such as geysers, storm clouds and volcanoes. Former Oakton Student Wins Pulitzer Prize

John Sullivan currently teaches investigative reporting at Northwestern University.

The following information was submitted by Oakton Community College. Former Oakton student John Sullivan co-led the team of Philadelphia Inquirer reporters that won the Pulitzer Prize for Public Service journalism on April 16. Sullivan and his team won the Pulitzer for the seven-part series “Assault on Learning” revealed that violence in the city’s schools was widespread and underreported, with 30,000 serious incidents over the last five school years. Earlier: Maine West students recognized by organization that seeks to prepare emerging leaders and entrepreneurs for careers in marketing, finance, hospitality and management. Quite frankly, I'm taken back however with even the suggestion that violence in inner city schools (south and west sides in other words) is "underreported." That's all you hear.
