Based at the Illinois Science and Technology Park, NanoInk Inc. ‘abruptly’ closed its doors. The company employed some 80 people, according to Crain’s Chicago Business.
Skokie-based NanoInk, Inc. closed its doors earlier this month, Crain’s Chicago Business reported. The company was located at the Illinois Science and Technology Park (ISTP). Its biggest backer, Ann Lurie, who is the widow of Sam Zell’s former business partner, Robert Lurie, poured about $150 million over a decade before finally deciding to pull the plug. Roughly 80 NanoInk employees were “abruptly” told that the company would be closing its doors in three days on Feb. 12, Crain’s reported. In June 2012, the Village of Skokie matched a $250,000 grant aimed at providing nanotechnology courses at Oakton Community College (OCC), among other schools. Bobak Khalili was recently named to the 2012 Junior College Men Scholar All-America Team. “Bobby has been an outstanding contributor and leader to our program for the past two seasons,” said Raiders head coach Steven Brody.
The National Soccer Coaches Association of America (NSCAA) recently named Oakton Community College men’s soccer player Bobak "Bobby" Khalili, of Schaumburg, to its 2012 Junior College Men Scholar All-America Team. This is the first year that NSCAA has had such a team. Khalili received his award in Indianapolis on Jan. 19. To be considered for the team, a student-athlete must have at least a 3.30 cumulative grade point average (on a 4.0 scale), start more than 50 percent of games, and be a significant contributor to the team. A sophomore defender, Khalili has a 3.80 GPA while majoring in liberal arts. Khalili was one of only 13 named to the NSCAA’s inaugural scholar-athlete squad. Oakton Community College students camped out in shanties on the Des Plaines campus to bring attention to the issues surrounding homelessness, and to raise funds for the college’s chapter of Habitat for Humanity, on Nov. 27.
Creature comforts were at a minimum for 20 to 30 students at Oakton Community College in Des Plaines on Tuesday night as the group camped out in the campus courtyard in handmade shanties. The group braved the chilly weather and hard concrete in cardboard boxes and tents to increase awareness about homelessness and to raise funds for Oakton’s student-run chapter ofHabitat for Humanity. Sahil Pruthi, treasurer for the group and co-project manager for the event, said the purpose of the second annual Shantytown project was to advocate and educate on the issue of homelessness. From the community ~ The newly built Rivers Casino in Des Plaines has contributed $60,000 toward Oakton Community College to support the college's new Science and Health Careers Center, the school said Monday. The contribution is part of the $500,000 the casino recently awarded to 16 organizations throughout Des Plaines and the Chicagoland area. The 93,000-square-foot Science and Health Careers Center, currently under construction, will house state-of-the-art classrooms, labs, and other teaching facilities for the College’s anatomy and physiology, biology, chemistry, earth science, medical laboratory technology, nursing, physics, and physical therapy assistant programs. From the community ~ The grand opening of Oakton’s annual women’s juried art exhibition, The Personal is Political: The Transformative Power of Women’s Art, which features more than 80 women artists from throughout Illinois and across the country is on Thursday, from 5 - 8 p.m. on Oct. 4. The event will be held at Koehnline Museum of Art at Oakton Community College's Des Plaines Campus, 1600 E. Golf Road. The exhibition runs through Friday, Oct. 26.

Examine the nature of forgiveness, faith, and compassion in Oakton Community College’s staged reading of Jessica Dickey’s powerful work, The Amish Project. Taking as its subject the 2006 killing of five girls at an Amish school in Pennsylvania, the piece explores the shooting through the eyes of seven community members – some fictional, some drawn from life, but all touched by the events of the day and its aftermath. Presented by the Performing Arts at Oakton, The Amish Project will be performed at the college’s Studio One, 1600 East Golf Road, Des Plaines on Saturday, Sept. 29, at 8 p.m., and Sunday, Sept. 30, at 2 p.m. Tickets are $8 for general admission.
