Niles West News Nominated for Story of the Year Award

The National Scholastic Press Association (NSPA) announced individual contest finalists in the 2013 NSPA Awards Week. Niles West News (NWN) writer Ena Sarancic was named a finalist for the Story of the Year (Diversity) award. Her article “Ruhi Qurashi: The Passionate Muslim Gymnast” qualified in the Diversity category. Last year, NWN editor Gabby Abesami was a finalist in the same category and her story went on to win first place.

The Story of the Year contest is co-sponsored by The Headline Club, the Chicago chapter of the Society of Professional Journalists. Student work is honored in the following five categories:  News, Feature, Editorial, Sports and Diversity. This year there were more than 750 entries for Story of the Year. Finalists were selected based on the following criteria:  value, importance or worth of story; quality of reporting and quotes; quality of writing and editing; and credibility and leadership.

Winners will be announced at the Journalism Education Association / NSPA Fall National High School Journalism Convention on November 16 in Boston.
