The crowd at the Curragh Irish Pub in Skokie was jubilant Monday night after watching the Chicago Blackhawks clinch the Stanley Cup in Game 6 of the finals.
"That was the craziest 17 seconds of hockey I've ever seen," said Sergio Socite, who was at the pub watching the game with a group of friends from Morton Grove and Skokie on the outdoor patio.
"And I've been watching for a long time, even through when they were horrible in the late 90s," he added.
Inside the pub, Phil Argyris acknowledged that once the Boston Bruins scored their second goal to tip the score 2-1 in their favor, he didn't think the Blackhawks could come back.
"No, I thought it was over," he said.
His friend Jimmy Harisos had a different take, however.
"I wanted them to get it done there (in Boston)," he said. "You never know. I wouldn't want them to come back here and have a 50-50 chance in a Game 7."
Harisos said that before the game, he predicted to his friends the Blackhawks would win 3-1.
"I was pretty close," he said of the 3-2 final score.
Even though it was a Monday night, patrons were in no rush to depart. Instead, they took their time savoring the long-awaited Blackhawks victory.
